Seth's* story
When Seth came to Brisbane Youth Service he was homeless, carrying everything he owned in a backpack.
Despite the challenges he faced, he was still going to school every day – determined to learn and build a better future for himself.
Until this point, nothing in Seth's life had been stable, except for his deep love of learning.
His dad died suddenly when he was just nine years old. Two weeks after the funeral, his mum sent him away to live with relatives he hardly knew.
"She said she didn't want me anymore."
For years he suffered violent abuse at the hands of his uncle.
Eventually, he found himself homeless, with nowhere safe to go.
Shelter is just the beginning
For a lot of young people we meet, crisis is all they’ve ever known.
They’ve never had the chance to feel safe or to imagine a future that isn’t about just surviving.
And while a safe place to sleep is essential, it’s just the beginning.
Because what young people need most isn’t just a roof. It’s a sense of belonging – people who show up, a place where they feel safe being who they are, a reason to believe things can get better.
From crisis to confidence
When Seth came to Brisbane Youth Service, everything changed.
For the first time, he had a safe place to stay, people who believed in him, and the support to chase his goals.
"This, I thought, is a place to call home. It was here, in this haven, that the true work of rebuilding began.”
Seth finished school, graduated in the top 30% of his year, and found the sense of belonging he’d always been missing.
"The sense of belonging, the feeling of being truly supported, was a revelation."
Today, thanks to the generosity of people like you, Seth is studying a double degree in Education and Arts. He dreams of becoming a teacher – someone who can inspire and believe in others, the way others finally believed in him.
How your gift helps
Safe housing
A safe, stable home is the foundation for healing, independence, and a brighter future.
Without secure housing, young people are trapped in crisis, unable to focus on education, employment, or mental wellbeing.
Your support can help Brisbane Youth Service to provide a range of housing programs that not only shelter young people but help them rebuild their lives with dignity, support, and purpose.
Early intervention
Every young person deserves strong connections to family, school, and community.
Without support, early issues like family conflict or domestic violence can lead to isolation and homelessness.
With your gift, you can help deliver early intervention programs that rebuild trust and connections – keeping young people safe, supported, and on track before homelessness begins.
Mental health
Every young person deserves to feel heard, supported, and empowered to build a better future.
For young people like Seth, mental health challenges often stem from trauma, violence, and ongoing instability – making it hard to heal and thrive.
Your donation can help provide vital wraparound care, including psychology and counselling services, so young people can access the support they need to recover and grow.
